On July 3rd, the Cross Party Group (CPG) on Medical Research hosted an event to showcase how medical research benefits the people Wales. The CPG has been operating within the Senedd since November 2018 and brings together Members of the Senedd from all parties, alongside third sector representatives, industry leaders, patients, and clinicians, to strengthen the medical research environment in Wales.

SAIL Databank was among the research organisations and institutions invited to host a stand at the event, providing information on how it has contributed to research in Wales. The event gave SAIL the opportunity to engage with Senedd members, research organisations and the public to discuss the pivotal role data plays in medical research.

As recommended in the CPG’s November 2023 report, the event served as a platform to discuss the impact and significance of this ongoing medical research across the country. The report highlighted the benefits of medical research for the people of Wales and its economy, with key recommendations including:

  • Improving access to clinical trials.
  • Prioritising research as a key economic driver by supporting universities and incentivising collaboration.
  • Integrating research into workforce planning.
  • Promoting and sharing examples of ongoing medical research across Wales.

During the event, Health and Care Research Wales and its partner organisations aimed to highlight the breadth of research in Wales, emphasising their roles and raising the profile of their efforts. They shared insights into key national projects and updated stakeholders on progress made since the 2023 CPG report. The event also showcased the impact of work by leading researchers and research organisations. Key national activities showcased included the One Wales approach to study setup and industry collaboration, the initiatives of the Wales Evidence Centre, the Health and Care Research Wales Faculty, and the NHS R&D Framework, which includes the Board champions initiative.
